Street Sweeping

The City of West Covina is currently starting the installation of "No Parking on Street Sweeping Days" signs all around the city.  This has been in the works for many months or even years.

However, most residents are unaware of what is actually happening in the city or even aware of the actions our elected leaders are taking that impact us residents.  In this case, it started back in 2023 (possibly earlier).

This process of restricting parking on street sweeping days came up back in 2023 when the City Council directed city staff to conduct "Community Meetings" to gauge the interest in implementing this new restriction.  The city conducted four community meetings over a couple of months and they were all conducted by TransTech (an engineering contractor to the City of West Covina).

During these meetings it is widely been reported by those who attended those meetings that the residents overwhelmingly objected to the proposed restrictions on parking.  Residents were shocked that the presenter (TransTech Employee) was simply just telling residents what they thought should happen and how this program should work "based on other cities" and how the program works in those cities (many of which TransTech is also a contractor).

As residents asked questions and proposed alternate ideas, the majority of residents that we have heard from have said they felt "ignored" or "marginalized" during the meetings.  As it has been told to us, nearly every resident left those meetings feeling as though they were not doing the meetings to get actual resident input, but instead, checking boxes to say they had conducted these meetings.

For additional information about this entire process, please check out our dedicated page about the process the city took and the results of the decisions the City Council made in implementing this undesirable new restriction on residents.  CLICK HERE

West Covina FD vs. Los Angeles County FD

June 3, 2020 - West Covina's Audit and Finance committee met to discuss the budget for fiscal year 2020-21.  During this meeting, the topic of switching to the Los Angeles County Fire Department and abolishing the West Covina Fire Department was brought up to help "balance the budget" and lower expenses.  This was not a popular choice and if history serves us, the City of West Covina already voted on that exact topic in December 1997.  About 70% of the voters said no.

More to come on this subject as the city has scheduled a "Town Hall Meeting" on Monday, June 22, 2020 at 6:00pm.  They have also scheduled a Special City Council Meeting on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at 7:00pm.  We have a lot to review, edit and post so please be patient.
